Objective: Nasal septal deviation is a common disorder of the nose and patients commonly visit clinics with complaints of nasal obstruction. As a result of nasal obstruction, patients are exposed to snoring, which causes hypoxia. Hypoxia leads to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are new markers for inflammation. In this study we have aimed to study the relationship between hypoxia, PLR, NLR and other platelet markers in patients with septum and external deviations.

Cancer of the thyroid gland is the most common endocrine malignancy constituting for less than 1% of all reported human cancers 1. The propensity of occurrence of thyroid carcinomas is two to four times more in females as compared to males with a median age at diagnosis being 45–50 years [1,2]. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common histological type of thyroid cancer and accounts for more than 80 % of thyroid malignancies. Classical PTC (cPTC) is the most common (80%) sub-type of papillary thyroid carcinoma followed by follicular variant (FVPTC) which is found in 9–22.5% of patients [3].

Adenoid enlargement is uncommon in adults. We studied the varied presentation of adenoid hypertrophy in two adults. A 45 year old male who presented with nasal obstruction and snoring, and a 35 year old male who presented with non resolving chronic otitis media. In both the patients, adenoid hypertrophy was diagnosed by nasal endoscopy and confirmed by CT scan. Adenoidectomy in these patients resulted in symptomatic improvement. Therefore, adenoid hypertrophy should also be considered as a cause or contributing factor in nasal obstruction and related pathologies in adults.

Stylohyoid syndrome or eagle’s syndrome is caused by calcification of the stylohyoid ligament or elongation of the bony styloid process. It may remain asymptomatic or it may present with facial neuralgia, foreign body sensation in pharynx, throat pain or even otalgia and cephalgia. Diagnosis is mainly based on clinical examination and confirmed by the radiological findings. The mainstay treatment is surgical excision via external approach or intraoral approach. We are reporting a case of unilateral stylohyoid syndrome along with the literature review.

Objectives: To establish our current practice of ‘group and save’ blood for nasopharyngeal tumour biopsy (NB), and to determine the rate of blood transfusions among patients who underwent NB under general anaesthesia. Methods: A retrospective chart review of all patients who underwent biopsy of NB in our tertiary institution between January 2006 and December 2015 was undertaken. Those with Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofi broma were excluded. Data retrieved included patients’ characteristics such as age/sex, anaemia, primary tumour extension, and histology. Outcome measures included rate of ‘group and save blood’ requests, intra-operative blood loss, blood transfusion rates. Comparison was made between those that were requested to group and save blood prior to surgery (group ‘A’) and the group ‘B’ that were not so requested.

Objective: The goal of this study was to use the results from nasopharyngeal tube polysomnography (NPT-PSG) to detect glossopharyngeal airway obstruction in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and to compare the results with those obtained by observing sleep apnea/ hypopnea after nasopharyngeal tube insertion during drug-induced sleep.

Introduction: Clefts of the lip may cause cosmetic and social problems. Clefts of the palate may affect feeding, speech and hearing. Objective: To document the clinical and epidemiological features, surgical techniques (Millard’s repair for cleft lip, and the Oxford palatoplasty for cleft palate) and the outcome of treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi, between January 2010 and December 2014. Patients and Methods: Data on cleft patients were retrieved from the records of the cleft clinic and theatre records at KATH and analysed.

These pictures are of a 45 -year old male patient with a swelling on the tip of tongue from the last one year. The swelling increased progressively in the last one year with a recent onset of mild discomfort. He has never shown to any physician before and once swelling reached to a large size he reported to us. MRI revealed a solid mass with isodense contrast in T1.
